How Bebo Works

Why #Bebo’s $600 million exit continues to define the social network’s early history

Once upon a time, the only important names in American social media were Facebook and MySpace. This story is out of date. The network connectivity story is even more fragmented, with regional giants often outperforming US giants in their home markets. Take the UK for example. Facebook didn’t take that crown. Bebo did.

Bebo wasn’t just another clone. This is a free platform where you can upload photos, videos and personal information. The user interface is unique. Connect with old friends and make new ones with a unique user experience.

Its impact was global from the start. Users are registered from more than 10 countries. The US, Australia, Canada, Poland, France and Germany all have active bebo communities. Its user base is not huge compared to Facebook, but it is dense.

This strength comes at a price. Founders Michael and Sochi Birch sold the company to AOL in 2008. The deal is worth about $600 million.

The Rise of San Francisco Startups

Bebo launched in 2005. When it was acquired by AOL, the San Francisco-based site had more than 40 million registered users. This is a significant number for a platform that has never fully breached the US lead.

Bebo was not abandoned even after the acquisition. Affiliated with AOL People Networks. This strategic move integrates Bebo with other AOL properties. AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is one of our partners. ICQ is a classic instant messaging service. The goal is clear. It’s about building an integrated social ecosystem.

But now comes the fun part. Although based in the US, Bebo continues to enjoy success overseas. The US market has shifted to other platforms. The international community supports Bebo’s unique style of social networking.

How Bebo is changing user expectations

Why is this important today? Bebo proved that regional dominance was possible. This goes to show that you don’t have to beat America to be worth hundreds of millions. This shows that a consistent and passionate user base is more valuable than just numbers.

The $600 million sale to AOL set a precedent. This shows that early social networks were valuable assets even if they were not market leaders in each country. The Birch family didn’t just build a site. They have built a brand that is loved and supported by users all over the world.

Bebo’s legacy isn’t in its current usage. It’s in the exit. Social media success in London, Paris and Sydney turned out to be different than in Palo Alto. The $600 million check was the final period on that sentence.

How #Bebo connects your digital life in one place

If you already have an AOL or AIM account, the setup process is very smooth. Bebo simply takes your current credentials and creates a new profile. You still have to make manual adjustments, but all the hard work is done.

What if you don’t have your old instant messaging account? The threshold is very low. Name, gender, date of birth, valid email address and password. Then complete the CAPTCHA check to prove you are not a robot. Once you’ve cleared that hurdle, Bebo guides you through the next steps. Most are optional.

The first optional step is to demonstrate trust. Bebo will ask your email contacts if they already use the platform. To confirm it, you need to enter the username and password of your email address. The service uses this access to index your contact list and connect addresses to your database. If a match is found, Bebo marks it and suggests adding the person as a friend.

This is not a step that everyone is ready to take. Sharing your email password with a social network is like giving away your keys.

Then the actual building of the profile begins. Normal stuff. Upload your photo. Enter your hometown. Make a list of things that interest you. The logic is simple. More information makes it easier to find. Depending on how you view privacy, this is either a feature or a bug.

Once your profile is published, you can start exploring.

Working with Bebo Dashboard

Your homepage is your control tower. You can see what your friends are doing and you can subscribe to news feeds on specific topics. Like other social networks at the time, Bebo encouraged users to integrate the app into their profiles. These applications appear directly on the home page.

The navigation box is at the top. This includes your profile picture, page view statistics, and a notification panel of events and alerts since your last visit. You can add pictures, videos or applications in the same section. Bebo also supports integration with email services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail. Check your mailbox without leaving the site.

Below that lay the lifestream. This is a feed that shows updates from Bebo friends. Usually, this required you to provide login credentials can aggregate data from multiple services such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. This usually involves providing login information to these external sites. Once granted access, Bebo fetches updates from these platforms and compiles them into a single timeline on your profile.

Finding friends follows the same logic. You can invite people you know or give Bebo access to your email contacts again. As the list grows, you can check and add friends of friends if you want. You can also search for specific users using Bebo’s search bar. Or naturally, you can make friends with people while browsing through photos and videos. If you like the same content as someone else, you’ll see their profile picture and have a direct connection.

Java dependencies

Bebo relies on Java applications for its many unique features. Java is a programming language widely used by web designers to build interactive programs. To perform these functions, you must download and install Java on your computer. It wasn’t built-in. This is a prerequisite for a complete experience.

File Hosting, My Life Story, Whiteboard

How Bebo Video Hosting Works Without Breaking the Bank

Most platforms require you to jump through hoops to share your videos. Bebo has partnered with Motionbox to handle the heavy lifting. If you upload a clip to Bebo, it won’t stay there. It goes straight to Motionbox. This is important because Bebo’s video player relies on Flash. Admittedly, this is an old tech stack, but it works well when it’s in use.

The free tier is surprisingly generous for casual users. You get 100 MB of storage space. By today’s standards, this is not a very large space. This corresponds to about 5-10 minutes of HD material. Enough for shooting quick clips or short home videos. If you need more, there are additional options. The price is $29.99 per year. Enjoy unlimited HD video storage. For power users, this price point is competitive.

Create a profile with my life story

Facebook shows news. Bebo wanted you to remember. This feature is called “My Life Story”. This is an interactive timeline. You build it by creating events. Each event requires a date, title and description. You can attach a photo. You can link to other websites.

Imagine your last birthday party. There are more than a dozen pictures. Create an event. You date it to the day of the party. Upload your image. Friends can now browse your history chronologically. They see milestones. They see the moments.

This is what makes Bebo stand out. Facebook hasn’t been very good at this for a long time. MySpace is a mess. Bebo’s approach is similar to Plurk’s. Plurk organizes your entries based on when they were posted. Bebo lets you set any date. You can go back in time and add events. It’s less like a feed and more like an autobiography. You curate your past.

Whiteboard: more than just a wall

Every social media site has walls. Facebook has it. Twitter has it. Bebo called it the whiteboard. This also serves the same purpose. Friends left comments. They left a note. But Bebo has a twist.

Whiteboards aren’t just for writing. It included a Flash-based art application. You can draw directly on your profile. This changes the dynamic. You can create detailed images. Or you can draw stick figures. This is a simple form of expression. It adds a personality that words cannot capture.

Why are these features important?

Bebo wasn’t trying to be everything to everyone. Focuses on specific interactions. Video hosting was handled by a specialist partner. Creating a timeline enables nostalgic curation. Whiteboards enable creative expression.

These features define the user experience. These are more than just utilities. They are a way to tell your story. Timelines give you control over your story. Whiteboards allow you to express your personality. Video integration makes sharing easy.

This is a different social network. Less about broadcasting updates. More about building a personal archive. The tools are simple. But they worked. They encouraged users to engage differently. Spend more time on their profile. Think about how they express themselves.

This technology is outdated. Flash is dead now. The user interface feels old. But the concept persists. People liked organizing their lives

How #Bebo’s social networking features connect users to content

Bebo’s core utility mirrors that of almost every other great social platform: it’s a tool to keep in touch with lost acquaintances, meet strangers, and exchange media. But value propositions don’t happen automatically. This site rewards the effort. If you create a profile and abandon it, the platform offers little in return. It becomes a digital void. You can become a hub by actively developing connections and constantly sharing the latest information.

Joining an active network opens doors you didn’t even know existed. Before the Internet, people often had to wait for a television broadcast to find the latest news or interesting videos. Gone are the days of gatekeeping. Information is now spreading like wildfire. Someone will find something interesting. They distribute it to their circle. That circle shares it with theirs. Suddenly millions of people were experiencing the same content at the same time.

This virality creates serendipitous overlaps. You may find that your two groups of friends are actually connected with mutual acquaintances that you never knew existed. These hidden links are important. You can take advantage of growing network of friends to achieve real results. Do you need a new job? The network can help. Are you looking for an apartment in a difficult market? The network can help.

Content creation is another pillar of the experience. Motionbox integration allows users to upload videos directly to their profile. This makes Bebo a distribution channel. You can create video logs (vlogs) to discuss trending topics. You can create episodic web series and share them using your site’s existing community of friends. It lowers the barrier to entry for content creators who want to build an audience without building an independent website.

“Bebo can integrate updates from half a dozen other Web sites and services on your Bebo profile.”

The platform also acts as a central organizer of your online life. By adjusting certain settings, Bebo extracts information from other websites and services into a single profile. This is what tech journalists at the time called “lifestreaming”. Instead of logging into five different accounts to see what your friends are up to, your information is displayed in one place. It reduces the friction of information consumption.
