Portugal is stepping onto the global digital stage. Big time.
On Tuesday, the official ceremony for Google’s Nuvem submarine cable took place at Lisbon’s Oceanarium. It wasn’t just a ribbon-cutting. It was a declaration. A new digital corridor crossing the Atlantic is now open for business.
Minister Delegate for State Reform Gonçalo Gonçalo Matias didn’t mince words. The goal? To link North America and Europe along a fresh route. At a moment when 95% of the world’s data flows through the ocean floor, this isn’t trivia. It’s infrastructure.
Portugal becomes the first country in its region with a direct link to the US via this specific system. But why now? And what does “Nuvem” actually do?
What is the Nuvem transatlantic cable?
Google announced this project in 2023. The name means “cloud” in Portuguese. A bit on the nose, but effective.
Here are the hard numbers.
- Length: ~7,000 kilometers.
- Capacity: ~384 terabits per second.
- Structure: 16 pairs of fiber-optic cables.
The route is specific. Landfall in the US lands in South Carolina, specifically Myrtle Beach. On the Portuguese side, the cable touches down in Sines. It’s not a straight line, though. The system uses intermediate landing stations in Bermuda and the Azores.
This creates a robust triangle. Data doesn’t have to rely on a single path. It can detour. When one point congests or fails, the others hold the line.
According to the newspaper ECO, the cable is expected to go live next year. So, patience is required. But the groundwork is laid.
Why do we need more undersea cables?
Let’s get technical for a second. You think Wi-Fi holds the internet together? No. It’s fiber-optic submarine cables.
They carry about 99% of all international traffic. Calls. Videos. Bank transfers. All of it. Satellites simply don’t have the bandwidth to handle the global load. And they suffer from latency. Cables are fast. They’re also shielded.
Layers of steel, copper, and polymers protect the glass inside. They handle pressure. Currents. Even sharks, apparently.
Failures happen. But usually, it’s humans. Anchors. Fishing nets. Or nature’s temper—earthquakes, landslides. Resilience is key. And aging infrastructure is a headache. Nuvem addresses the former by offering a fresh, high-capacity route.
How does Nuvem improve connectivity?
Google’s stated objective is straightforward: improve network resilience. Meet the growing demand for digital services.
The route adds diversity. That’s a tech buzzword for “we won’t crash if one thing breaks.”

MEO confirmed their involvement without revealing specific investment figures. Their argument is solid, though. Direct connection between Portugal and the US makes the country more attractive. Data centers? Cloud platforms? Global tech services? All need low-latency links to American markets.
MEO is betting on the digital economy. Portugal is betting on infrastructure. Both are betting on the future.
Where does Nuvem fit in Google’s Atlantic strategy?
Google isn’t new to this game. The Nuvem project follows two other massive undertakings.
In 2022, Equiano launched. It connects Western Europe to Africa’s west coast. Portugal is part of that loop too. It links Europe to South Africa.
Then came Firmina. That cable connects the US East Coast (South Carolina again) to South America. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay. Firmina doesn’t touch Portugal, but it shows Google’s focus on the Americas-Europe axis.
Nuvem complements these. It focuses squarely on the Iberian-Atlantic-North American triangle.
And there’s more. Google is already planning Sol. Another transatlantic system. This one will connect the US, Bermuda, Azores, and Spain. Portugal expects to be involved, or at least impacted, as early as next year.
This completes a unique investment portfolio in transatlantic resilience.
Why choose Portugal?
Geography is the obvious answer. Portugal sits at the westernmost edge of mainland Europe. It’s the natural bridge. Closest point to the Americas. Natural hub for Africa too.
But location isn’t enough. Stability matters.
Portugal offers political stability. Talent. Engineers. Researchers. A young generation fluent in technology and languages. And energy. Clean, competitive energy. Data centers are energy hogs. Portugal runs on renewables. Over 97.8% of its energy comes from clean sources, based on 2024 Pordata data.
Google highlights Portugal’s focus on strengthening its digital infrastructure. That focus signals readiness. It says, “We are ready to host your servers.”
It’s a strategic alignment. Portugal needs the tech. Google needs the location. The ocean between them is just a medium.
What comes next?
The cable launches next year. The physical infrastructure will follow. MEO will integrate it. Users might not notice a immediate speed boost today. But the capacity is there. Waiting to be used.
The question isn’t whether this matters. The question is how quickly the ecosystem adapts. Data centers will move. Latency will drop. New services will emerge.
Portugal is no longer a peripheral player in the transatlantic data flow. It’s in the center.
