The company is reportedly developing a machine priced “well under $1,000,” marking a significant shift from its traditionally premium pricing strategy.

The new laptop, currently codenamed J700, is already in early production. To achieve the lower price point, Apple is considering several cost-cutting measures. These include using a smaller, lower-end LCD display – potentially as small as 12 inches, compared to the 13.6-inch screen on the current MacBook Air.

Another key strategy involves utilizing A-series iPhone chips, which, while less powerful than the M-series chips found in higher-end MacBooks, are significantly cheaper. The upcoming model might feature a variant of the A19 Pro chip, designed to deliver MacBook-level performance at a lower cost.

Market Targeting & Competitive Landscape

The target audience for this affordable Mac includes casual users, students, and businesses needing a device for basic tasks like web browsing, document creation, and light media editing. Apple also aims to capture a share of the education market, where Chromebooks currently hold a strong position.

Industry analysts note that entering this space will require substantial investment to compete with established players. Josh Goldman, Managing Editor at CNET, stated that Apple “can likely take a chunk of that market,” but breaking into the education sector, where Chromebooks have gained ground since the pandemic, will be difficult without significant financial backing.

Implications for Apple’s Product Lineup

This move represents a departure from Apple’s usual strategy, where its most affordable MacBook (the M4 MacBook Air) starts at $999. A $599 price point would place the new Mac in direct competition with entry-level Chromebooks and Windows laptops, potentially attracting consumers who might otherwise opt for an iPad with a keyboard (currently priced around $600).

Apple also has higher-end models in development: a MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and an M5-powered MacBook Air scheduled for release next year. The introduction of a sub-$1000 Mac would broaden Apple’s appeal across diverse consumer segments.

In essence, Apple is responding to market pressures by expanding its product range to include more accessible options, while still maintaining its reputation for quality and design.
