iPhone App Locking and Hiding: A Practical Guide

26

Apple’s iOS 18 update introduced a significant privacy feature: the ability to lock and hide apps directly on your iPhone. This allows users to restrict access to sensitive or frequently misused apps, such as shopping or social media, from unwanted viewers—particularly children or casual borrowers. The feature addresses a common issue: accidental purchases or privacy breaches when handing your device to others.

Locking Apps for Enhanced Security

Locking apps requires Face ID or passcode authentication every time the app is opened, adding an extra layer of security. Not every app can be locked; core system apps like Camera, Find My, and Settings remain exempt. However, most third-party applications, including App Store and Messages, can be secured.

To lock an app:

  1. Press and hold the app icon.
  2. Select “Require Face ID” (or passcode).
  3. Confirm the action by tapping “Require Face ID” again.

This ensures that unauthorized users cannot access the app without proper authentication.

Hiding Apps for Discretion

Alongside locking, iOS 18 allows users to hide apps from their Home Screen entirely. This moves the app into a dedicated “Hidden” folder within the App Library, making it less visible. The process is similar to locking:

  1. Press and hold the app icon.
  2. Select “Require Face ID”.
  3. Choose “Hide and Require Face ID”.

The system prompts confirmation, warning that hidden apps will no longer display notifications or icons on the Home Screen. Selecting “Hide App” removes the app from the main interface.

To access hidden apps, swipe right in the App Library until you reach the last page. A folder labeled “Hidden” (with an eye icon) will appear at the bottom. Tapping this folder requires Face ID or passcode to reveal the hidden apps. Note that apps remain visible in other system menus like Battery Usage.

Reversing Locks and Unhiding Apps

To unlock or unhide an app, press and hold the icon and select “Don’t Require Face ID”. Enter your Face ID or passcode to confirm. Hidden apps will not automatically reappear on your Home Screen; you must manually add them by long-pressing in the App Library and selecting “Add to Home Screen”.

The introduction of app locking and hiding in iOS 18 is a direct response to user demand for greater control over device access. These features reduce the risk of accidental actions or privacy breaches, making iPhones more secure and user-friendly in shared environments.
