Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform built on the AT protocol, has unveiled Attie, a new AI-driven application designed to allow users to create highly personalized content feeds. The announcement, made at the Atmosphere conference over the weekend, marks a significant step towards user-controlled filtering and curation in a landscape increasingly dominated by algorithmic noise.
The Rise of Customization in Social Media
Attie distinguishes itself as the “first agentic social app on atproto,” meaning it uses AI to respond to natural language prompts, effectively coding custom feeds based on user requests. Instead of requiring technical expertise, users can simply describe the content they want to see, and Attie will generate a tailored feed.
Examples of prompts include “poetry, long-form fiction craft, and writing process from people I follow” and “Show me electronic music and experimental sound from people in my network.”
This approach directly addresses a growing problem: the overwhelming volume of low-quality, AI-generated content polluting major social networks. As Bluesky CEO Jay Graber noted in a recent blog post, platforms aren’t actively addressing this issue, leaving users struggling to find reliable information.
Bluesky’s Shift in Leadership and Focus
The launch of Attie coincides with a leadership transition at Bluesky. Graber is stepping down as CEO to become chief innovation officer, signaling a clear shift toward more experimental development. The company’s vision appears to be centered on empowering users with AI tools rather than relying on centralized algorithmic control.
The AT Protocol and Decentralization
Attie’s foundation in the AT protocol is crucial. The protocol’s open nature allows for greater flexibility and user agency, unlike walled-garden platforms where algorithms are often opaque and inflexible. This shift towards an open protocol is intended to put the power “directly in users’ hands.”
The app is currently in a closed beta, accessible only by invite. Those interested can join the waitlist on the Attie website. The move toward AI-powered personalization represents a broader trend in social media, where users are increasingly demanding more control over their digital experiences.
Bluesky’s Attie represents a promising solution for reclaiming social media from algorithmic chaos, offering a glimpse into a future where AI serves individuals rather than platforms.
