Firefox Puts Users in Control of AI Features With New Update

Mozilla Firefox has rolled out a new version (148) that integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) features—but crucially, the update also includes comprehensive controls that allow users to disable them entirely. This move reflects growing user concerns about AI integration in web browsers and Mozilla’s commitment to user choice and privacy.

The Rise of AI in Browsers

AI is rapidly becoming ubiquitous online, with major browsers like Google Chrome, Apple’s Safari, and Microsoft Edge already offering AI-powered functions. Firefox, with its 200 million monthly active users, is joining this trend, but with a key difference: users can easily opt out.

Why the Choice Matters

Mozilla’s decision to prioritize user control over AI features is significant. According to Erik Avakian, a technical counselor at Info-Tech Research Group, this demonstrates an understanding of the privacy, security, and compliance implications of AI-driven browsing.

“It validates that AI browser features, even assistive ones, can introduce real privacy, security, and compliance considerations. The difference is that Mozilla is choosing to introduce and implement these types of controls early, while others are forcing the conversation by moving fast with AI and breaking trust.”

New Features & How to Disable Them

The update introduces several AI-powered features, including:

  • AI-powered summaries of links
  • AI-assisted tab grouping suggestions
  • AI language translation
  • AI-generated alt text for PDFs
  • An AI chatbot sidebar compatible with ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini.

Users can toggle each feature on or off via a new menu in Firefox’s settings. This granular control is a direct response to community feedback, as outlined by Firefox head Ajit Varma:

“Listening to our community, alongside our ongoing commitment to offer choice, led us to build AI controls.”

Mozilla’s Privacy-First Approach

Mozilla has long emphasized privacy, and this extends to its AI implementation. Product leader Jolie Huang stated that the browser’s commitment to privacy-preserving AI drives them to develop features that boost productivity without compromising personal information. The initial rollout is desktop-only, with Mozilla planning to expand to other platforms after gathering user feedback.

The new Firefox update highlights a growing tension between AI integration and user autonomy. By giving users the power to choose, Mozilla is setting a precedent for responsible AI implementation in web browsing.
