Meta Abandons Zuckerberg’s Metaverse Vision

23

Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitious push into the metaverse, once heralded as the future of Facebook (now Meta), is effectively over. After five years and roughly $80 billion in losses, the company is sharply scaling back its virtual reality efforts, signaling a complete shift in strategy.

The Metaverse’s Rapid Decline

Zuckerberg first announced his metaverse vision in 2018, renaming Facebook to Meta to emphasize the commitment. The idea was simple: an immersive digital world where users could interact, work, and socialize through virtual reality (VR). However, the flagship Horizon Worlds app never gained traction.

In recent months, Meta laid off 10% of its metaverse division and began to de-prioritize VR development. This week, the company announced that access to Horizon Worlds through VR headsets would end on June 15th. Though partially walked back – some existing VR apps will be maintained – the overall direction is clear: Meta is no longer actively building its original metaverse concept.

A Pivot to Artificial Intelligence

The abrupt shift comes as Meta doubles down on artificial intelligence (AI). Zuckerberg now positions “superintelligence” – advanced AI capable of acting as a personal companion – as the company’s next major frontier. Meta plans to spend at least $115 billion this year on AI development, including constructing massive data centers to power the technology.

This move reflects a broader trend: while VR remains a niche interest, AI is rapidly gaining momentum across industries. Popular platforms like Roblox and Fortnite have overshadowed Meta’s metaverse ambitions by offering more accessible and engaging digital experiences.

The abandonment of the metaverse isn’t just a business failure for Meta; it highlights the difficulty of forcing a future that consumers aren’t ready for. The company’s rapid pivot to AI suggests a recognition that the next wave of tech innovation lies elsewhere.
