Your Inbox Can Finally Talk Back

Google isn’t done with AI. Not even close. At IO 2026 last Tuesday they rolled out a bigger piece of the “AI Inbox” puzzle for Gmail. You can talk to it now. Just ask questions instead of hunting through keywords.

They call it Gmail Live. Powered by Gemini, it’s designed to dig out the buried stuff. Your flight number? The Airbnb door code? Dentist appointment time? It should find it.

Before this, you’d type fragments into a search bar. Bad idea if those words appear everywhere. You end up sifting through noise. It’s frustrating, really. Almost universal frustration.

“Gmail Live can answer naturally phrasied questions… and pivot if you need to interrupt,” says Devanshi Bhandari. Product lead. She explained this at a briefing before the big reveal.

Google needs to prove AI does more than burn power and raise electric bills for new data centers. People are tired of the hype. They want utility. Finding an old email is low stakes, sure, but it works. It’s tangible. Or at least Google is betting on it being that.

Bhandari demoed it. Asked about a kid’s show-and-tell. Then switched to a hotel in Detroit. No rigid commands. Just natural language. Voice, if you prefer. It’s like chatting with a chatbot but your own history is the source.

The system understands nuance. “Field trip” versus just “trip” matters to it. It jumps topics without flinching. Pulls room numbers. Figures out who you mean even if you don’t say the name.

It’s not just email. Google Keep gets similar voice tech soon.

Old search isn’t dead though. Gmail Live sits alongside it. Another tool, not the only tool. Google seems to have learned its lesson after Photos. That AI search upgrade caused riots. They backed down, made it optional. Smart move, perhaps. Don’t force AI on users who hate it.

Other changes too. Drafts ready to send. Files accessible faster. Task management where you actually check things off.

The visual “AI Inbox” overview is expanding. Earlier this year only Ultra subs got it. Now Pro and Plus join the party. One page shows you everything you’re behind on.

Voice feature? Different rules. Comes this summer. Google AI Ultra subscribers only to start with.

The rest of the news is wilder. Google Search is basically done as we know it. The Gemini app is sharpening its elbows for ChatGPT. Gemini Spark is the new 24/7 assistant.

Lots to process. Your inbox just got loud.
