BuzzFeed’s Last-Ditch Effort: Can AI Save the Viral Media Giant?

10

BuzzFeed, once the darling of digital media, is facing a critical moment. The company that defined viral content for millennials – think “The Dress” or Michael B. Jordan playing with puppies – is now scrambling to avoid collapse. Founder Jonah Peretti admits BuzzFeed is in a cash crunch, a consequence of ad revenue draining to tech giants and failed expansion strategies.

The core problem? The advertising model that fueled BuzzFeed’s growth is broken. Facebook and Google now dominate digital ad spending, leaving publishers like BuzzFeed struggling to compete. A public offering in 2021 proved disastrous, with the stock plummeting as the company’s fortunes reversed.

But Peretti isn’t giving up. He’s betting on a radical turnaround: artificial intelligence. He’s returning to a “founder mode” approach, essentially rebooting BuzzFeed as a startup. This is a high-risk strategy, which he openly acknowledges to investors.

The solution lies in BuzzFeed’s subsidiary, Branch Office. Inspired by Nintendo, this unit will develop AI-powered applications, including interactive games and niche social communities. Three projects are already in development:

  • Conjure: A photo-based mystery game launching Friday.
  • BF Island: A private chat app for shared jokes among friends.
  • Quiz Party: A collaborative platform for creating and sharing BuzzFeed-style quizzes.

Peretti’s vision is to tap into the next wave of content consumption, leveraging AI to create engaging experiences beyond traditional articles and videos. The success of this pivot remains uncertain, but it represents BuzzFeed’s final gamble for survival.

The future of BuzzFeed hinges on whether it can reinvent itself as an AI-driven entertainment hub. If Branch Office fails, the viral media empire may fade into obscurity.
