Roku Upgrades Voice Control with AI, Adds Bluetooth to Streaming Sticks

Roku is enhancing its streaming platform with artificial intelligence (AI) integration in its Voice feature and expanding Bluetooth connectivity to its popular Streaming Stick devices. These updates, slated for release “in the coming months,” will give users more interactive and convenient control over their entertainment experience.

AI-Powered Voice Interactions

The core upgrade is the addition of AI to Roku Voice. The system will leverage both Roku’s own AI models and third-party large language model (LLM) technology to allow for more natural and contextual conversations.

This means users will be able to ask complex questions like “Is Barbie suitable for kids?” and receive detailed responses, as well as follow up with additional queries. Roku’s spokesperson confirmed that the platform will adhere to existing privacy policies.

The company has not yet disclosed which AI provider they are partnering with, but the functionality is expected to mirror that of similar AI-powered TV features, such as Google Gemini.

Expanded Bluetooth Support

Bluetooth headphone connectivity, previously limited to larger Roku set-top boxes and TVs, is now coming to the Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus. This addresses a common user request and makes wireless listening more accessible.

App and Interface Improvements

Roku is also refining its mobile app with new swipe-up controls for quick access to features like “Find My Remote” and closed captions. The search bar will be integrated into more screens, including the “What to Watch” and “Live TV” sections.

A new “Ways to Watch” button will appear beneath titles when browsing, providing trailers and a list of streaming apps that host the content.

Additional Updates

The company unveiled a second portable Roku projector, the Vankyo Roku TV Smart Projector H500R, available at Walmart this week. Pricing details are forthcoming. The Roku Sports tab will also receive live scores and game time reminders, keeping users updated on their favorite events.

These updates aim to make Roku more competitive in the streaming market by delivering a smarter, more connected, and user-friendly experience. The integration of AI in voice control is a clear trend, as platforms race to provide intuitive and conversational interfaces. Roku’s moves suggest a commitment to keeping pace with the evolving expectations of cord-cutting audiences.
