CNET is launching a new awards program called “People’s Picks” that relies on direct feedback from consumers, rather than solely on expert lab tests. This initiative aims to identify tech products that people genuinely use, trust, and love in their daily lives.
How It Works
The program invites readers to participate in a brief, three-minute survey where they rate and review the devices they recommend. The survey asks about overall satisfaction and specific features of tech products. The data is collected through Alchemer, ensuring transparency in the results. The core idea is that real-world usage provides more valuable insights than controlled testing alone.
Methodology and Scoring
Devices are ranked based on average respondent ratings on a scale from 0 to 5, with 5 being the highest score. CNET editors will analyze overall satisfaction across all brands, ensuring that no manufacturer can influence the rankings through payments or advertising. The program is designed to be entirely free of bias, relying solely on user votes.
Why This Matters
Traditional tech reviews often focus on specifications and performance metrics. However, many consumers rely on word-of-mouth recommendations and peer reviews when making purchase decisions. CNET’s People’s Picks bridges this gap by combining expert knowledge with the collective wisdom of users, creating a more comprehensive and trustworthy evaluation system. The program offers a fresh perspective on what makes tech products truly valuable in the eyes of consumers.
