AI Funding Boosts Underrepresented Languages in MENA Region

Google.org has committed \$1 million to Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi, backing research led by Dr. Thamar Solorio to improve artificial intelligence (AI) for languages historically overlooked by the tech industry. The project specifically targets the data imbalance that causes AI to perform poorly with underrepresented languages, particularly those spoken across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The Data Divide in AI Development

The problem is simple: most AI models are trained on English and other high-resource languages. This creates a significant gap in accuracy and usability when applied to regions like MENA, where linguistic diversity – including numerous Arabic dialects and minority languages – is high. Building AI that understands these languages effectively requires more than just translation; it demands frameworks that account for cultural nuances and the unique structure of the language itself.

Democratizing AI Innovation

The MBZUAI initiative focuses on developing “resource-lean” AI training methods. This means creating systems that require less manually labeled data and lower computational power. The goal is to lower the barriers to entry for local developers, startups, and researchers who currently struggle to compete with the massive investment required for traditional AI training. By establishing a framework tailored to the MENA region, the research aims to empower communities with AI tools designed for their specific linguistic and cultural realities.

Beyond Technical Frameworks: Talent Development

The funding extends beyond pure technology. A key component supports training the next generation of AI specialists, providing opportunities for postdoctoral and early-career researchers in a field where MENA has been historically underrepresented. This focus on human capital is crucial for long-term sustainability and innovation.

Google.org’s Broader Investment in MENA AI

This \$1 million grant is part of Google.org’s larger AI Opportunity Initiative for MENA, launched in 2024 with a planned \$15 million commitment through 2027. Since 2019, Google.org has allocated over \$25 million to AI-related projects across the region, including cash funding, in-kind contributions, and employee volunteer hours. Previous investments have targeted entrepreneurship, water management, and youth education, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to AI development in MENA.

The project’s potential impact spans multiple sectors, from education and cultural preservation to digital communication. By addressing the data divide head-on, MBZUAI’s research could ensure that AI benefits all communities in the region—not just those whose languages dominate the current landscape.
